The alkalinity value dampens the pH value regulation. If the alkalinity is low, the pH value can be changed more easily. Either by using a base (a pH increaser) or an acid (a pH reducer). If the alkalinity is high, the pH value is more difficult to regulate.
An alkalinity value of 100 - 150 mg/l CaCO3 (American unit) would be optimal. In Europe, the unit would be SI, m-value, i.e. 2-3 mmol/l.
It takes time and a little patience to adjust the alkalinity to your water correctly, as the pH value should remain between 7.2 and 7.8.
The correct alkalinity should be aimed for because this means you will need fewer pH regulating agents and thus save costs on the pool .
